The catastrophic quake has killed more than 20,000 people.

Turkish authorities said the death toll had risen to more than 16,100 in the country, with more than 64,000 injured. Survivors gathered around campfires and clamored for food and water in the cold temperatures.

The 7.8 magnitude quake and its powerful aftershocks were so immense — and spread so wide, including in areas isolated by Syria’s ongoing civil war — that many are still waiting for help.

A devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has raised questions about how long people can survive in the rubble.

There have only been a handful of notable earthquakes to strike the U.S. greater than the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that recently struck Turkey and Syria. The earliest dates back to 1700.

Rescuers are hoping to pull survivors from the rubble before they succumb to the cold two days after an earthquake tore through southern Turkey and war-ravaged northern Syria.

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake hit around 6:15 a.m. Monday in the Buffalo area.
