LA ICE protests, Day 12: Curfew in downtown LA lifted, additional troops deployed

An appellate panel heard arguments Tuesday but made no ruling on whether President Donald Trump or California Gov. Gavin Newsom will control the state's National Guard. Last week, Newsom had a short-lived victory when, just hours later, an appeals court gave Trump the power to maintain control of the National Guard in Los Angeles County.

Timeline of events

Below are live updates of the ongoing protests happening across Southern California (all times listed in Pacific Standard Time):

No curfew

10 p.m.: After a couple of nights of curfew, downtown Los Angeles businesses can go back to operating in their normal weeknight hours.

No ruling announced

2 p.m.: An appellate panel has heard arguments but made no immediate ruling on whether President Donald Trump or California Gov. Gavin Newsom will control the state's National Guard. The hearing stemmed from a challenge to Trump's decision to federalize the Guard, which a San Francisco federal judge ruled last week was illegal and unconstitutional.

Downtown LA curfew lifted

11:45 a.m.: Effective today, the curfew within downtown Los Angeles is lifted, Mayor Karen Bass announced.

"The curfew, coupled with ongoing crime prevention efforts, have been largely successful in protecting stores, restaurants, businesses and residential communities from bad actors who do not care about the immigrant community," Mayor Bass said. "I am lifting the curfew effective today, and as we continue quickly adapting to chaos coming from Washington, and I will be prepared to reissue a curfew if needed. My priority will continue to be ensuring safety, stability and support in the Downtown neighborhoods."

Over the weekend, Trump declared he will use "every resource possible" on ICE raids targeting Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City and other Democratic cities.
