Crews knock down 62-acre brush fire in Kagel Canyon

(FOX 11/CNS) - Fast-moving flames Wednesday in the hills of Lake View Terrace had firefighters scrambling to protect homes.

The 62-acre fire broke out just before 3 p.m. in Kagel Canyon and quickly spread, officials said.

Battling low humidity and high winds, firefighters launched an aggressive attack on the ground with approximately 400 firefighters as well as from the air.

Robin Bennett and her daughter live near the fire's path. They did not evacuated, but about 20 of their neighbors did voluntarily.

"Were you worried you might have to evacuate?" Stanton asked.

"Yeah, all these people had to evacuate on this street right here but we were across the street so I think we're gonna be okay," Bennett said.

Fire crews were able to get a handle on the flames before any homes were damaged or had to be evacuated, which is something Tenesha Jordan had to do seven years ago.

"It was about 2 or 3 in the morning and a loud truck came by and said we had to evacuate and get out. It was pretty scary," Jordan said.

Crews from Los Angeles City, County and the U.S. Forest Service managed to knock down the fire in about two hours.

Officials fear more fires could erupt this week as temperatures rise over the next few days along with low humidity.

"That has a drastic affect on how dry the actual ground fuels are that carry the fire so it dries out the grass and the brush and makes it more volatile," said Seneca Smith with the U.S. Forest Service.
