Police searching for sexual assault suspect near Azusa Pacific University

On a street corner across from Azusa Pacific University, students talk about the crime.

One said, "I'm not going to live in fear," but the others are nervous after the school put out emails and fliers warning of a man who tried to kidnap a woman.

Police said the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of East Alosta. According to Officer Mike Bires, the man grabbed the woman as she was walking back to her apartment, threw her over his shoulder and when she fought back, he sexually assaulted her and took off.

It is being described as an attempted kidnapping and sexual assault.

"What happened is where he grabbed her, where he touched her on the body, constitutes sexual assault," Azusa police said.

Police will not say if the woman is a student, but say she is college-age and lives on the street where the apartments are filled with students.

The suspect was described as 5'5" tall, Hispanic, wearing dark clothing and a baseball-style cap. He is believed to be in his late teens or early twenties.
