New hoverboard laws to take effect in 2016: Helmet, age requirements

"Hoverboards" were a hot trend for Christmas this year, and if you're planning to ride one, there are some new regulations you should know about that will take place in 2016.

As of Jan. 1, 2016, all riders will be required to wear a helmet and be at least 16 years of age.

"The new law defines 'electronically motorized board' as a wheeled device designed to be stood on and powered by electronic propulsion, going no more than 15 miles per hour," according to the California Highway Patrol.

The law will allow riders to use them in bike lanes, pathways and on roads with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour or less.

Violators could face a fine of up $250.
