Happy New Year LA! But please don't fire your guns into the air

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - Local law enforcement is sending out a serious warning to anyone in the Los Angeles area who thinks firing guns in the air is a good way to celebrate the New Year.

The LAPD and LA County Sheriff's department is reminding residents that shooting a firearm into the air is illegal and will have major consequences. If you feel like you've heard this warning before - you have. It's repeated every year and here's why you're hearing it again.

The good news…is that there was a 24 percent decrease from the previous year, but some people are still not getting the message.

Law enforcement officials emphasize that offenders will face a year in state prison for the negligent discharge of a firearm.
