The nation’s second-largest school district said it wants to avoid penalizing students who may be struggling during the public health emergency.

Amid an ongoing surge and the day after the first doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine were administered to some healthcare workers in Los Angeles County, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced more doses were set to arrive by next week. 

Health officials at the University of Southern California have connected an outbreak of new COVID-19 cases at the university to Thanksgiving gatherings. In addition, testing will be mandatory for all students, faculty, and staff starting in January.

USC announced Tuesday it will be able to conduct 100,000 COVID-19 tests per week during the spring semester, a significant increase from the 5,000 a week testing capacity during fall.

At the moment, Karl Dorrell and the Colorado Buffaloes remain on standby mode just in case they’re summoned to Los Angeles as a fill-in for the Pac-12 title game Friday.

Vaccinations against COVID-19 began Monday in California amid a huge surge in infections and hospitalizations.

Riverside County health officials on Monday reported 6,741 newly diagnosed coronavirus cases and 13 virus-related deaths since Friday, as the number of available licensed intensive care unit beds countywide dwindled to zero.

Orange County expects to receive its doses of COVID-19 vaccines manufactured from Pfizer by Wednesday with frontline hospital workers getting the first shots, officials said Monday.   

Organizers say they've collected more than 800,000 signatures in their petition. They have until March 2021 to turn in the signatures.
