Federal officials said that when LAUSD schools were forced into remote learning by COVID, the district limited services provided to students with disabilities, failed to track services that were provided and notified staff that the district was not responsible for providing "compensatory education" to students with disabilities who suffered learning loss during the pandemic because the campus closures were not ordered by the district.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has officially lifted its mask mandate.

"Too many children simply can't afford higher education," said Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez. "Because of the work we've done here and the funds we've invested, 44,363 children can now plan for a future that includes higher education."

Starting Tuesday, the Los Angeles Unified School District dropped its outdoor mask mandate for students and staff at campuses.  

Alberto Carvalho, who comes to the district after leading the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system since 2008, was unanimously chosen by the board on Dec. 9 to succeed Austin Beutner.
