Teen sought for beating elderly man with a bat surrenders to police

SANTA ANA, Calif. (FOX 11 / CNS) - A young man, who allegedly beat a 72-year-old great-grandfather with an aluminum bat after the senior citizen tripped and fell on top of the suspect's car, surrendered Thursday to Santa Ana police.

The attack took place at a 76 gas station at 4502 Westminster Ave. about 7.25 p.m. last Sunday, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

As he was walking out of the station, Jose Chacon of Santa Ana tripped and fell on top the car of 18-year-old Samuel Elijah Alvarez, Bertagna said.

Alvare got out of the car and the pair argued. He then allegedly got an aluminum bat out of his vehicle and began charging at Chacon, who went to get something out of his truck that looked like a pipe, Bertagna said.

Video surveillance footage shows the two fighting. Police allege Alvarez struck Chacon several times, causing multiple facial fractures and body injuries, then fled. The last blow hit Chacon on the face and knocked him to
the ground.

Vanessa Chacon-Johnson told the Orange County Register that her father was taken to UCI Medical Center, where he received stitches to his face, which had been bruised purple, making him unrecognizable, Chacon got out of surgery this afternoon, shortly after Alvarez turned himself in with his attorney at 2:10 p.m., Bertagna said.

Alvarez was being booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. He had been wanted on a probation violation warrant for possession of brass knuckles, Bertagna said.
