College of the Canyons on lockdown after reports of woman with rifle on campus

Reports of a woman with a rifle at the College of the Canyons - Valencia campus prompted the school to go on lockdown.

About 2,000 students and 200 faculty members were told to shelter in place.

The campus remained on lockdown while Santa Clarita Sheriff's deputies and campus security went through the college and conducted safety checks. The lockdown was lifted just before 7 p.m.

The campus is located in the 26400 block of Rockwell Canyon Road where deputies were sent to investigate shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said no crime was committed and they determined there was no weapon involved. Through the course of the investigation, they say the woman connected with the incident had only taken tree branches from a tree and may have been mistaken for a weapon.
