College admissions process 'turning the tide'? FOX 11 parenting contributor weighs in

LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - The College admissions process is about to undergo a huge overhaul. This comes from a new report out of Harvard called "Turning the Tide."

The goal is to promote empathy and community service and to reduce excessive achievement pressure.

FOX 11 Parenting Contributor Donna Tetreault talked to Richard Weissbourd of Harvard's graduate school of education.

The report includes concrete recommendations in three core areas:

1. Promoting more meaningful contributions to others, community service and engagement with the public good.
2. Assessing students' ethical engagement and contributions to others in ways that reflect varying types of family and community contributions across race, culture and class.
3. Redefining achievement in ways that both level the playing field for economically diverse students and reduce excessive achievement pressure.

Weissbourd offered Donna some great tips for parents:

Parent Tips:

-Limit courses/Activities- limit AP classes and excessive extracurricular activities
-Value all contributions- working to earn money for the family, taking care of sick relatives
-SAT- only take the exam twice, research shows scores don't change a lot
-Colleges- be open to many colleges, not just the most prestigious
-Altruism- start thinking about others and how you can help the community
