Car nearly slams into restaurant in South Los Angeles, driver flees

It was a chaotic scene at the corner of Martin Luther King and San Pedro Tuesday morning in South Los Angeles.

The driver of a 1994 green Honda Civic crashed head on into a light pole, which in turn caused the pole to crash through the front windows of Gus Jr. fast food restaurant.

The Honda then went up in flames.

Authorities said as firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading into the restaurant, they had to deal with a man who was trying to get into the burning car.

By the time police arrived, the driver of the Honda was long gone -- making the incident a hit-and-run.

The restaurant, which is being renovated, was closed at the time and no one was injured.
