Thousands of California parents and teachers who oppose school vaccine mandates took part in a statewide walkout Monday.

The vaccine requirement will hit low-income families hard because they may have fewer resources to find an alternative private school or homeschooling options, the petition states.

Workers must have at least one dose by Friday to continue reporting to work, according to the district. If they do not receive their second dose by Nov. 15, they will be "subject to separation from district service."

Starting Oct. 1, students enrolled in the Los Angeles Unified School District and other participating districts in L.A. County will be able to take the Metro for free under a pilot program that will last through June 30, 2023.

After mounting pressure from the community and school boards, California on Friday became the first in the nation to announce to require eligible students to be vaccinated for in-person learning.

United Teachers Los Angeles is calling for the Los Angeles Unified School District to put together a vaccine mandate for eligible students.
