Dating app murder victim's family prepares to face convicted killer in court

The grieving family of Johnavah Granderson is getting ready to face their loved one's convicted killer in court.

Granderson was murdered on July 19, 2021. The 25-year-old man, remembered by loved ones as "Duga," was blindsided by a group of gang members during an arranged meetup through a dating app.

FOX 11's Hailey Winslow spoke with the family ahead of the killer's sentencing.

"I was literally out of my mind for almost four years, you know, and it woke up a lot of sickness that I didn't have. Now I'm trying to be an advocate and get out and help other mothers that's going through the same things that I went through," said his mother, Nicole Hall.

Janaeja Bonton, Duga's sister, reflects on the emotional journey of grief leading up to the killer's sentencing date.

"This is like a victory lap for me," Bonton said. "[The convicted murderer] is going to deal with that for the rest of his life every single day."

According to Winslow's report, Granderson was the fourth person targeted by the same gang members. Two of the three surviving victims have since testified in court about their incidents. The fourth known victim, a transgender woman, has since moved out of California after surviving the alleged attack, Winslow reports. The victims were all lured through dating apps, Winslow reports.
