The XFL is set to return to the gridiron in the spring of 2022, according to new league owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the former WWE star-turned-movie giant, partnered with RedBird Capital to buy the league at the 11th hour, Sportico reported Monday. The league was nearly set to go on auction. Johnson and the firm reportedly paid $15 million for the fledgling football league.
The league had previously suspended operations in response to the pandemic.
The XFL’s future appeared to be in doubt as COO Jeffrey Pollock said in a Friday conference call that all employees had been laid off, according to multiple reports.
