Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Fifty Shades Of Movies

Fifty Shades of Grey – Rotten at 30%

Starring: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Marcia Gay Harden

Directed by: Sam Taylor-Johnson

Adaptation of the best-selling book by EL James. A college student interviews a young billionaire businessman, and is lured into a masochistic relationship.

Critics don't like it. It's a better story than what's in the book, but it's still not very good. I was bored with it.

Kingsman: The Secret Service – Certified Fresh at 70%

Starring: Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton

Directed by: Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class)

Adaptation of the graphic novel by Mark Millar. A young man is recruited into a top-secret spy agency, while his mentor investigates a dangerous plot.

Critics like it. It's stylish and over-the-top, although some critics say it's all a bit too mean-spirited. I liked it.

The Last 5 Years – Rotten at 56%

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Jeremy Jordan

Directed by: Richard LaGravenese (Beautiful Creatures, Behind the Candelabra)

Adaptation of the hit musical. Jamie and Cathy's marriage is falling apart, and the story is told almost entirely through song. Cathy's story is told backwards, Jamie's is forwards, and their songs meet in the middle.

Critics like it. Some of the more theatrical elements don't translate as well as they could have, but it succeeds in large part because the excellent cast.

What We Do in the Shadows – Certified Fresh at 92%

Starring: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathon Brugh

Directed by: Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi

A mockumentary about four vampire roommates trying to get by in modern Wellington New Zealand.

Critics love it. It's smart and funny, and many critics compare it favorably to Spinal Tap. I really loved it.
