Model Nichole Coats, found dead in DTLA, cause of death revealed

The cause of death of a model who was found dead in her downtown Los Angeles apartment in September was revealed Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

Nichole Coats' death was ruled an accident caused by cocaine and ethanol toxicity, according to the medical examiner. Her case status remains "open."

Officers had responded to the 32-year-old woman's home to perform a welfare check the morning of Sept. 10, but no one responded. Around two hours later, someone called to report a dead body at the home.

The LAPD has maintained there was no evidence to suggest the two cases were related to each other.

Police released few details of the investigations, other than to say that Mooney's death was being investigated as a homicide and Coats' death was "being handled as a death investigation."

No arrests have been reported, police said Tuesday.
