Local divers react to Conception boat tragedy

If you've ever spent some time on a boat with sleeping quarters you know that such quarters can be a little snug.

That certainly was the case for the Conception. Hal Eisner takes a look into that area-- from people who know it very well.

Thanks to a video from a man named 'James' who was recently on the Conception we can now see the sleeping quarters on the boat.

It's tight, but boats usually are.

In fact, Hal Wells who owns Hollywood Divers has been on many says tells FOX 11, "The tight quarters are to be expected on any boat you go on pretty much.

They have to save space... I can imagine if that cabin was filled with smoke - middle of the night - groggy - it would be a tough situation. It's just horrible," he says, "It's going to be a sad week."

Both Wells and FOX 11's Christina Gonzalez and I have been out on the water filming for FOX 11 News In Depth.

And, both have been on the Conception. Gonzalez says, "I can't imagine what the people must've gone through."

From her own Labor Day diving expedition, Gonzalez said the owners are very responsible. Wells says that too.

In the Mayday call we hear something about "no escape hatch."

That could have meant something as simple as there was no way out, but no one will know for sure exactly what happened until the investigators get a handle on what happened. We asked Wells about that transmission.

He told us, "I've been on this boat and there's plenty of room to come out. It's a wide berth to get out. It's not like you have to crawl out of a ladder or anything."

"It breaks my heart.", said Gonzalez.
