Homes, businesses evacuated after natural gas line ruptures in Reseda

Evacuations were ordered after workers ruptured a natural gas line in Reseda.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the incident happened around 10 a.m. in the area of White Oak Ave. and Saticoy St. Thursday.

The fire department said there was no threat of a fire, illness or injury.  "The natural gas fumes have dissipated, and LAFD hazmat experts have identified no ongoing concerns,'' LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

As a precaution 25 homes, businesses and a house of worship were evacuated as crews worked.

Evacuations were lifted around 1:15 p.m., according to the LAFD.

"It is believed the damage was caused by a third-party contractor working in the area,'' SoCalGas spokeswoman Melissa Bailey said.

The fire department turned off gas service to some homes as a precautionary measure.

"Though natural gas can be flammable at specific concentrations, LAFD hazmat experts are using special sensors to monitor natural gas fumes in the community, and have identified no specific concern beyond the initial 500-foot precautionary zone,'' said Humphrey.
