Eaton Fire: Altadena braces for more destruction amid Santa Ana winds
LOS ANGELES - The deadly Eaton Fire continues to burn in Los Angeles' Altadena area as firefighters braced for challenging conditions in the firefight this week due to another round of powerful Santa Ana winds.
The Eaton Fire is now considered one of the deadliest fires in California history with 16 deaths reported so far. Meanwhile, the massive Palisades Fire burning about 40 miles west accounted for an additional eight deaths.
As of Monday at 8 a.m., the Eaton Fire was 33% contained and had grown to 14,117 acres.

Damage inspection teams have completed inspections of 26% of all structures within the fire footprint, according to Cal Fire. They searched 364 properties on Saturday alone.

There are 17 missing persons reports by the LA County Sheriff's Office, but Luna said it appears there are more missing persons reports that just came in. Updated numbers will be released in the coming days. No juveniles have been reported missing, he said.
If you believe your loved one is missing, you are urged to contact the sheriff's office as soon as possible.

Other fires in the area include the 800-acre Hurst Fire, which was 89% contained in the latest update, as well as the Kenneth Fire, which was fully contained over the weekend.

Eaton fire curfew
There's a 6 p.m. - 6 a.m. curfew in place for all areas under mandatory evacuation orders because of the Eaton Fire, within the Altadena area. There is no curfew in evacuation zones located in the city of Pasadena.
Eaton fire death toll
Sixteen deaths have been reported since the fire broke out, according to a Sunday morning update from city and county officials. That makes it one of the deadliest in state history.

Multiple injuries were reported, including a firefighter who suffered a "significant injury from a fall" Thursday morning. That firefighter is stable and expected to make a full recovery, officials said Friday.
Eaton fire arrests
Luna said 30 people have been arrested in the Eaton fire zone. Six of those happened last night – three for curfew violations and three for additional charges, including carrying a concealed firearm and drug charges.
School closures
Pasadena Unified School District schools will remain closed from January 13-17, 2025.

State Route 2 (Angeles Crest Highway)
• Eastbound SR-2 (Angeles Crest Highway) closed at entrance of Angeles National Forest (postmile 26.7) to south of Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road. (PM 42.7).
Interstate 210 (I-210)
• Eastbound and westbound I-210 Arroyo Blvd. off-ramps closed.
• EB and WB I-210 Angeles Crest off-ramps OPEN.
• Eastbound I-210 Gould Ave. off-ramp OPEN.
Azusa
• SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road) is closed as a preventive measure north of Azusa; only residents are allowed to enter.
How many structures were damaged?
More than 7,000 structures have burned, including homes, apartments or commercial buildings and vehicles. It also substantially damaged five school campuses in Altadena and scorched more than 21 square miles.
The Eaton Canyon Nature Area, which hosted field trips, homeschoolers and preschools, has been totally burned, with all shrubs and wildflowers destroyed. Only a few exterior walls of the Eaton Canyon Nature Center were left standing.

Some physical school buildings in Pasadena have sustained damage, too. Schools throughout Los Angeles have been closed until air quality improves.
What caused the Eaton fire?
The exact cause of each fire is still under investigation, but they were fueled by extreme drought conditions, combined with the supersized Santa Ana winds that whipped flames and embers at 100 mph – much faster than usual.
