Mexican firefighters come to help with Palisades Fire

A group of firefighters from Mexico have arrived in Los Angeles to help crews fighting the Palisades Fire.

The Brief

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said firefighters from Mexico were en route Friday to help fight at least one of the fires devastating the Los Angeles area. 

He said those coming to help from Mexico will be joining more than 10,000 personnel already on the ground. 

They’d be heading to help battle the Eaton Fire, where more than 2,800 personnel were. 

"California is deeply grateful for President @ClaudiaShein’s support as we work to suppress the Los Angeles wildfires," he wrote on Friday in a post on the social platform X. 

Eaton Fire now 15% contained in Altadena, Pasadena

The Eaton Fire has devastated the Altadena community, killing at least six and destroying thousands of structures. The fire is now about 15% contained.

The Arizona Republic reported that Sheinbaum said in a news conference Friday that Mexican officials had spoken with President Biden and Newsom about sending support to Los Angeles. 

Crews from other states, countries battling LA fires

Crews from other states and countries have arrived to help battle the LA firestorm.

Firefighters from Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Idaho, Colorado, and Texas have also joined the fight.

Eaton Fire latest

Firefighters for the first time made progress Friday afternoon on the Eaton Fire north of Pasadena, which has burned more than 7,000 structures. Officials said most evacuation orders for the area had been lifted.

The fire was first reported Tuesday, Jan. 7, near Altadena and Midwick drives just after 6:15 p.m. in Altadena. By noon Thursday, the fire had reached the summit of Mt. Wilson, but officials said Friday that no structures on Mt. Wilson have been damaged. 

Acres burned: 14,117

The deadly Eaton fire was 27% contained as of Sunday night.

The death toll from the Eaton Fire in the Altadena and Pasadena areas rose to 16 Monday.

California fires

Other fires still burning Saturday in the Los Angeles area include the Palisades, Kenneth, Lidia and Hurst fires.

Palisades: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 23,700 acres and is 14% contained.

Kenneth: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 1,052 acres and is 100% contained.

Hurst: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 799 acres and is 76% contained.

Lidia: As of Monday morning, the fire has burned 395 acres and is 98% contained.

Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued for all residents living in and around these fires.
