Los Angeles beaches reopen after being closed due to lightning

Lightning spotted along the coast Tuesday morning prompted the closure of Los Angeles County beaches from Big Rock to Torrance, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division.

"An electrical storm with lightning has been reported in Santa Monica. Please evacuate all ocean and beach/sand areas. If on the beach or on the Santa Monica Pier, seek shelter indoors until the storm has ended," the City of Santa Monica said in a tweet early Tuesday.

By 10:30 a.m., the beaches between Torrance and Manhattan Beach were reopened following an evacuation prompted by the electrical storm. The remaining beaches, from Dockweiler Beach to Big Rock were reopened shortly before 11 a.m.

Authorities asked the public to stop all beach activities and seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle until the electrical storm passes.
