Wisconsin selected to face Oregon in Rose Bowl

Wisconsin was selected Sunday as the opponent for Oregon in the 106th Rose Bowl Game on New Year's Day.

A replacement for Big Ten champion Ohio State was needed because the Buckeyes were among four teams to qualify for the College Football Playoff, which consists of the top four teams in the final College Football Playoff rankings, as determined Sunday.

When the Big Ten or Pac-12 conference champion qualifies for the College Football Playoff the Tournament of Roses selects a replacement team from that conference based upon the CFP rankings.

Wisconsin (10-3) was eighth in the final rankings, two spots ahead of the next Big Ten team, Penn State (10-2).

The Badgers lost to undefeated Ohio State, 34-21, in the Big Ten Football Championship Game on Saturday in Indianapolis.

Oregon (11-2) upset Utah, 37-15, in the Pac-12 Football Championship Game on Friday in Santa Clara to be the conference's Rose Bowl representative.

Wisconsin will be playing in the Rose Bowl for the 10th time and the first since the 2013 game, which it lost to Stanford, 20-14. The Badgers are 3- 6 in the Rose Bowl, losing their first three appearances before defeating UCLA, 21-16, on New Year's Day, 1994. They have also lost each of their three most recent appearances.

The Ducks will be making their eighth Rose Bowl appearance and first since 2015, when they defeated Florida State, 59-20, in a College Football Playoff semifinal, improving their Rose Bowl record to 3-4.

Oregon defeated Wisconsin, 45-38, in the 2012 Rose Bowl.

Additional tickets for the Rose Bowl Game will go on sale at 9 a.m. Tuesday on Ticketmaster.
