Palisades Fire forces new evacuations near Encino and Brentwood

A massive flare-up of the Palisades Fire erupted Friday night, forcing a new round of mandatory evacuations and shutting down major roads in the area.

The Palisades Fire broke out on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and has burned through over 21,000 acres in and around the Pacific Palisades. The fire has killed at least five people so far.

As of Friday morning, the fire had grown to 21,596 acres with 8% containment. According to Cal Fire, the latest aerial survey of the Palisades Fire estimates that the number of structures destroyed is now 5,316. According to Cal Fire "structures" can include residential and commercial properties, RVs, sheds or other "minor buildings." 

Around 7 p.m. Friday, a new flare-up on the northeastern edge of the fire broke out, forcing evacuations in the Mandeville Canyon and Encino areas. The flames have also led officials to consider closing portions of the 405 Freeway near Bel-Air and Westwood.

Cal Fire noted that the Los Angeles Unified School District has canceled classes for all schools Friday. Residents are encouraged to avoid nonessential travel to allow firefighters ample room to work.

Evacuation orders and warnings

Fire authorities said 30,000 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders. People in the area of Palisades were urged to evacuate immediately. 

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said all evacuation orders and warning areas for the Palisades Fire are under a curfew order from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday 

At 7 p.m. on Friday, the LAFD issued new evacuation orders and warnings associated with the Palisades Fire. Included in the mandatory evacuation area is the Getty Center.

On Wednesday afternoon, a new expanded evacuation order was issued for all areas north of Montana Avenue from the beach to 11th Street. Residents in the area were told to leave immediately; the area is closed to the public. Evacuation orders for the red areas can be viewed on this map.

Santa Monica residents living between the northern border of the city and San Vicente Boulevard, and between Ocean Boulevard and 26th Street, are also being told to evacuate, according to the city's alert system around 7:30 p.m. on January 7.

According to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, over 10,000 households were evacuated and another 15,000 buildings, including businesses, were also evacuated.

  • Ocean Avenue, 7th Street, and 26th Street have all been shut down to northbound traffic into the Palisades
  • I-10 westbound has been shut down at Lincoln Boulevard. All additional access to northbound Pacific Coast Highway has been closed off
  • Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Entrada Drive and Malibu Canyon Road
  • Southbound Las Virgenes and Malibu Canyon is closed at Lost Hills Road is closed at Pacific Coast Highway

How to report missing people from Palisades fire

Families impacted by the Palisades Fire searching for information about missing loved ones who they cannot find can contact the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center, operated by the City of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department will be present to take missing persons reports.  

The Cheviot Hills Recreation Center is open on Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
