Thousands of "No Kings" rallies are planned across the U.S. Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s policies and his efforts to expand his power.

What are ‘No Kings’ protests?
The backstory:
Saturday’s rallies will be the third round of "No Kings" protests. They’re organized by a broad coalition of groups opposed to what they call authoritarianism under Trump, and his efforts to expand his power and punish political enemies.

Timeline:
Organizers announced Saturday’s protests in January, shortly after the killings in Minneapolis of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Plans had already been in the works, but their deaths during the surge of around 3,000 federal officers into Minnesota provided a new focus.

By the numbers:
More than 3,100 events are planned across all 50 states; over 9 million people are expected to participate. Opposition to the war in Iran could bring even bigger crowds.
Rallies are also planned in more than a dozen other countries, including Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, Mexico and Australia. In countries with constitutional monarchies, they call the protests "No Tyrants."

Organizers have designated the Minnesota rally, at the state capitol in St. Paul, as Saturday’s flagship event. They’re expecting upwards of 100,000 people.

Bruce Springsteen will headline the event with his song "Streets of Minneapolis." The rally will also feature singer Joan Baez, actor Jane Fonda and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, along with a long list of other national and local activists, labor leaders and elected officials.
What they're saying:
Ezra Levin, a cofounder of the activist group spearheading the events. said the national organizers chose Minnesota because it was subject to "some of the most horrific, sadistic behavior you can imagine" from the Trump administration.
Minnesota sues Trump admin over Pretti, Good shootings
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced a lawsuit on Tuesday over being blocked out from accessing evidence in the shootings of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and Julio Sosa-Celis at the hands of federal officers in Minneapolis. FOX 9 Minneapolis reporter Soyoung Kim joins LiveNOW's Austin Westfall with more.
"At the same time, in the Twin Cities earlier this year, we saw some of the most inspiring, neighborly, brave organizing that we’ve seen anywhere in the country, and it serves as an inspiration to all of us," Levin said.

The other side:
The White House dismissed the "No Kings" protests, calling them "leftist funding networks" with little real public support.
"The only people who care about these Trump Derangement Therapy Sessions are the reporters who are paid to cover them." White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement.
