March for security guard killed by LA County sheriff deputies was peaceful, until the end

The family of Andres Guardado was gone. They had marched, along with hundreds of people, from the site where their son was shot by Los Angeles County sheriff deputies to the department's Compton Station.

The march, organized by the community organization, Union de Barrio was peaceful, as was the rally in front of the barricades surrounding the station — at least initially.

The large crowd held their fists up in solidarity, as Guardado’s father said he wouldn’t wish this Father’s Day on anyone. Once the family left, many of the marchers headed home. But part of the group stayed behind, pushing into the barricades the deputies had placed around the station.

What particular incident provoked the use of less than lethal force by the deputies was unclear, but they began to fire paper balls, rubber bullets and smoke bombs into the crowd.

A helicopter circled above, declaring the rally an unlawful assembly.

FOX 11 crews saw at least six people put in handcuffs. The dwindling group that remained squared off with deputies, telling us it was as much about making a stand, as it was about Guardado.

His death is being investigated by sheriff homicide detectives, who say an autopsy will settle the family’s claims that the 18-year-old security guard was shot in the back while fleeing from the deputies.

Investigators claim he was not wearing any clothing or badge identifying him as security. They also say he is not licensed and was carrying a weapon.

He was shot six times, dying at the scene.

The family wants to see the video from security cameras at the location, but so far, investigators say there is no video. They said they are still waiting for the security company to provide the web-based images from the cameras.

Preliminary reports from an autopsy are expected next week.
