Man shot to death during altercation inside illegal gambling operation in Long Beach

A man was shot to death during a physical altercation at an illegal gambling operation in Long Beach.

Officers with the Long Beach Police Department responded to the 200 block of East 10th Street around 3:45 a.m. on October 15th for reports of a shooting.

Once officers arrived on scene they located a man suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. The victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. Police have not yet released the victim’s name but identified him as a 54-year-old resident of Lakewood.

Police located a suspect on the scene and identified him as 23-year-old David Gonzalez of Norwalk. Police say Gonzalez was injured during the alternation and taken to a hospital. Once released from the hospital he was taken into police custody.

In a statement, the police department says Gonzalez was a customer at the illegal gambling operation and got into an altercation with the victim, causing Gonzalez to shot the man.

Once he fired a shot at the man, police say several other people inside the business intervened… injuring Gonzalez.

An exact motive for the shooting is not known and police do not believe there was any relationship between the victim and the suspect.

Gonzalez has been booked into the Los Angeles jail on one count of murder and placed on a parole hold without bail.
