Man charged in 3-year-old's stabbing death in DTLA appears in court

The man charged with stabbing a 3-year-old girl at her parent's workplace appeared for the first time in court on Thursday.

Ricardo Utuy, 34, who also goes by the name Juan Perez, didn't enter a plea. The judge set his bail at $3,030,000 and continued his arraignment to Dec. 7.

Utuy is charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder for a similar attack on a woman back in March.

The judge didn't allow any media to film Utuy in court until his identity is verified.

However, the Los Angeles Police Department released his mugshot Tuesday, one day after Utuy turned himself into police for the murder of the little girl on Monday evening.

Prosecutors said he stabbed the 3-year-old they're calling "Baby Ruby" while she was at work with her mom and dad at a clothing factory in Downtown Los Angeles.

The mother said the girl went to give her dad a cookie when she saw her daughter running back toward her with Utuy close behind.

Detectives said Utuy stabbed the girl multiple times with a knife, and she later died at the hospital.

After releasing his photo, a female victim came forward alleging Utuy had also stabbed her back in March, according to detectives.

Now they're asking for help tracking down another person associated with Utuy, but all they have to go on is the name "Alex."

Detectives describe Alex as a male Latino who lives in Los Angeles. He's not a suspect in the cases, but might have information on Utuy's behavior that would help detectives.

Utuy faces life in prison if convicted of the charges.
