Man beaten to death outside Halloween Party in Hollywood, police say

A 29-year-old man leaving a Halloween party at a Hollywood nightclub was beaten to death by two men who chased him from the bar after it closed and one of the suspects was in custody, Los Angeles police said.

The fight happened about 2:20 a.m. Sunday outside of Couture, 1649 N. Cahuenga Blvd., LAPD Officer Aareon Jefferson and witnesses at the scene said.

Witnesses told responding officers that two women first got into a fight outside the club after it closed.

Following that, the victim, Devon Jelkes of Los Angeles, was chased from outside of the bar by two men who beat him and kicked him after they caught up to him, Jefferson said.

There's no word yet on why the fatal fight started.

Officers found Jelkes unconscious on the street near a vehicle parked in front of the club. He was treated at the scene for blunt force trauma by paramedics and then taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Jefferson said.

One of the suspect fled the scene on a party bus, Jefferson said. The bus was subsequently stopped and the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Dietrich Canterberry of Anaheim was taken off and arrested by LAPD officers.

Canterberry was booked on a charge of murder and was being held on $2 million bail.

The second suspect fled the scene on foot and remained at large this evening, according to police. He was described as black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 185 pounds, according to Jefferson. Police believe the second man was about 35 years old and was last seen wearing dark pants and a white T-shirt.

Anyone with information on the identity or whereabouts of the second suspect was asked to call LAPD's west Bureau Homicide at (213) 382-9470. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477. All tips can be made anonymously.
