Long Beach to consider transforming additional streets for outdoor dining with social distancing

More than two dozen streets in Long Beach could soon be blocked off to vehicle traffic as part of a program to re-purpose the space for outdoor dining so businesses are able to reopen safely while meeting social distancing requirements.

The "Open Streets Initiative," which was introduced by councilman Joe Buscaino, will be formally recommended to the city council on Tuesday night.

It would require streets to shut down to drivers between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. The initiative would allow restaurants to use sidewalks and low-traffic streets as outdoor dining spaces and would give them the ability to maintain capacity while adhering to social distancing and other health and safety guidelines.

The proposed list of neighborhoods which would be affected are:

District 1

• The Promenade North from East 3rd Street to East 5th Street

• East 4th Street to Long Beach Boulevard
