FOX 11 News goes IN DEPTH on School Safety and Black History Month

LOS ANGELES, CA (FOX 11) - This week's show hits a lot of interesting points. Starting with the school shooting in Florida and the fears that have rippled across the country on school campuses like ours in Los Angeles to a special look at people and places during this Black History Month. We begin with school safety.

SEGMENT ONE: Right now a debate is raging across our country about arming teachers with guns. This week the Vice President of the school police officers union says he doesn't want to see that. Rudy Perez is, along with the Los Angeles School Police Officers Assn. is floating an idea to put a tax on weapons and ammo that would be used to hire more school cops. He talks about that and school safety.

SEGMENT TWO: They call her "Sweet" Alice Harris. And, for most of her life she's helped kids and grown ups in Watts find the path to success. As part of our look at people and places this Black History Month we get up close and personal with Alice who says she'd like to be remembered this way…"if you needed me... I was there."

SEGMENT THREE: Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital is far different from its predecessor with almost the same name that closed because of alleged negligent deaths and bad service. We take a look at this high tech medical facility in LA's predominantly African-American communities in and around Willowbrook.

SEGMENT FOUR: In the black community barbershops and beauty salons have been like community centers. We check a few out.
