Fatal fiery crash on 605 freeway in Santa Fe Springs shuts down all lanes

One man was killed Tuesday morning in a fiery crash on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Santa Fe Springs, triggering the closure of the southbound lanes, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash was reported at 3:44 a.m. near the Telegraph Road exit north of the Santa Ana (5) Freeway, said CHP Officer Francisco Villalobos.

A caller reported a vehicle crashed into the center divider and subsequent calls reported that up to five vehicles were involved, Villalobos said.

A man of between 40 and 50 died at the scene but it wasn't immediately clear if he was in the vehicle reported in the initial call, Villalobos said.

There were reports of another vehicle catching on fire, he added.

Information about additional injuries was not immediately available.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office was summoned to the scene as well as a Caltrans crew to clean up debris and fluids, Villalobos said.

The southbound lanes of the 605 were closed for the investigation and were expected to reopen at 8:30 a.m., Villalobos said.
