VIDEO: 100-year-old woman rescued during Eaton Fire evacuations

Two LA County deputies are being praised for their heroic actions after saving a 100-year-old woman from a senior living home as the Eaton Fire spread nearby.

"I've been trying to find a way out. Don't lose me," the woman can be heard saying on bodycam video that was shared by the sheriff's department.

On the morning of Jan. 8, deputies Nicholas Martinez and Quinn Alkonis were searching a senior center in Altadena when they first encountered a woman who had returned from walking her dog, seemingly unaware of the danger. According to the sheriff's office, the woman was unsure if others were still inside, prompting deputies to immediately search the facility.

As the two went searching door to door, they heard a faint voice echoing from the hallway. They then discovered a 100-year-old woman trying to find her way out.

The woman told deputies that she missed the evacuation order because her hearing aids were charging.

They quickly guided her outside to safety and ensured no one was left behind.

"I'm glad we were there at the right time and the right place to help those ladies and to save those women and take them to safety. It was also a combined effort with the units that we had asked to come and assist us. And they were quick to come and assist us in helping search that facility. And it was a good day to be a deputy sheriff," Alkonis said.

Sheriff Luna praised their bravery and quick thinking, saying their courage and selflessness exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement.
