One person was killed and two other were critically injured Monday night when a car whose driver left the scene struck another vehicle that careened into a bus stop in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 6:40 p.m. in the 400 block of West 54th Street, near the Harbor (110) Freeway, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The injured were taken to a hospital and a fourth person declined ambulance transport from the scene.

The victims were a husband and wife, both in their 70s, and their daughter who is 52, Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.

The husband, 76, was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.

All three were sitting at the bus stop when a car making a right turn into a nearby driveway was struck by the suspect vehicle, he said.

The car careened into the bus stop, injuring the couple and their daughter, Lopez said.

The suspect vehicle was abandoned at the scene by its driver, who fled the area on foot, the officer said.
