Showers, cooler temperatures expected this week in SoCal

Showers are likely in the Southland Monday through at least Wednesday amid cool temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong winds were expected through the predawn hours, but a wind advisory that was supposed to expire at 6 a.m. in the San Gabriel Mountains and the Antelope Valley was cancelled a couple of hours earlier.

Strong winds buffeted the region over the weekend. The NWS reported Sunday afternoon that in the previous 24 hours it recorded gusts of 59 mph at Chilao in the San Gabriels, 47 mph in the Antelope Valley, 43 mph in the Santa Clarita Valley, 42 mph in the Malibu Hills, and 39 mph in the San Fernando Valley.

A red flag warning denoting a high risk of wildfire expired in the mountains and valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura counties around 6 p.m. Sunday after humidity levels rose above the low levels at which they had lingered.

Precipitation appeared likely today, with the NWS forecasting a 40 percent chance of showers in much of L.A. County, though only 30 percent in the Santa Clarita Valley and 20 percent in the Antelope Valley. Between a quarter and a third of an inch of rain is expected, said NWS meteorologist Curt Kaplan.

Also expected today, in contrast to the summer-like temperatures that prevailed last week, are highs ranging from the low to high 50s, although a high of only 37 is expected on Mount Wilson. Last week's highs were 10-15 degrees above normal, but today's will be around 10 degrees under the average,
Kaplan said.

Showers are forecast in L.A. County today, along with highs of 37 on Mount Wilson; 53 in Saugus; 55 in Avalon and Lancaster; 56 in Palmdale; 57 in Pasadena, San Gabriel and Burbank; 58 in Woodland Hills and at LAX; 59 in Long Beach and 60 in Downtown L.A.

Cloudy skies were forecast in Orange County, along with highs of 58 in San Clemente, Laguna Hills and Mission Viejo; 59 in Newport Beach; 60 in Yorba Linda; and 61 in Fullerton, Anaheim and Irvine.

Temperatures will be marginally higher tomorrow amid rain in Los Angeles County and showers in Orange County, according to an NWS forecast.
