An Anthropic AI researcher is sounding the alarm on the rapid development of artificial intelligence, warning there is a greater than 10% chance that AI could cause human extinction within the next decade. Evan Hubinger, Lead for Alignment Science at Anthropic, shared the stark estimate following the resignation of colleague Jacob Coxon, who accused top AI labs of "racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives." Hubinger acknowledged that while Anthropic understands the high stakes, researchers still do not have a clear plan on how to control and align future superintelligent AI systems before safety safeguards fall behind.
