White House shooting: Gunman shot by Secret Service, bystander also hit

D.C. police are responding to gunshots near the White House on Saturday evening, The White House has been placed on lockdown, according to multiple reports.

Reports of gunshots started coming around 6 p.m. ET

Fox News' Chad Pergram was at the White House on Saturday as part of the press pool. Sources with the U.S. Secret Service told Pergram that an individual approached a Secret Service checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, around 6 p.m., took a handgun out of his bag, and started firing at officers. 

Officers shot back, sources told Pergram, hitting the suspect. A bystander was also hit during the shooting.

A bystander was hit by the crossfire, a senior administration official told Pergram.

Other reporters have shared videos of Secret Service agents on the White House lawn.

Fox News reported that the lockdown had been lifted around 7:30 p.m. ET.

Officials said that the shooting happened after a man approached a security checkpoint and brandished a handgun. That's when the shooting happened.

The Metropolitan Police Department shut down several roads near the White House Saturday night, including Pennsylvania Avenue between 17th down and 19th Street, NW, and 17th Street between I Street and N Street, NW.

FBI Director Kash Patel said on X Saturday that the FBI and the Secret Service have responded to the scene. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
