Santa Monica police fatally shoot knife-wielding suspect in Palisades Park

Santa Monica police are actively investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that happened in Palisades Park Saturday afternoon. 

The incident unfolded as officers were on scene investigating an unrelated call in the popular public space.

What we know:

Santa Monica Police Department officers responded to Palisades Park near the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue to investigate a reported domestic violence incident. 

While officers were interviewing witnesses regarding that call, an unrelated individual armed with a knife charged directly at them, officials said. 

An officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual. 

Santa Monica Fire Department personnel provided immediate emergency medical care at the scene before the individual was transported to a local hospital, where they died from their injuries. 

The involved officer was not hurt.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not yet released the identity, age, or gender of the deceased individual. 

It's unclear what prompted the suspect to approach and charge at the officers while they were conducting their initial interview. 

The identity of the officer involved in the shooting is unknown.
