West Hollywood dispensaries will be selling pot by January 2nd
WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA (FOX 11) - As the city of Los Angeles gets ready for legalizing marijuana. One West Hollywood business is getting ready for long lines as early as January 2nd!
As she thinks about the upcoming legalization of marijuana for those over 21 Dina Browner says, "I am both excited and terrified."
Her friend "Snoop Dog" has dubbed her Dr. Dina. She was the inspiration of the Mary Louis Parker character on the TV show WEEDS. And, a consultant on the Netflix show DISJOINTED with Kathy Bates.
Browner owns AAHSWEHO with Jason Beck. AAHSWEHO stands for Alternative Herbal Health Services in West Hollywood.
The exclusivity of being first has him seeing the possibility of big bucks and lots of business because, as he says, we will be one of only four locations in Los Angeles county that is legally allowed to sell adult use cannabis to anyone 21 as of January 2nd.
The city says they didn't want to have it start on the first even though that's the day the law goes into effect.
He's planning a big promotion for 6am Tuesday morning for those showing up early. He calls it "Wake and Bake" although no edibles can be ingested or cannabis smoked on site under the law.
Beck says, "We are legally allowed to open from 6am to 10 p.m. in the City of West Hollywood."
This dispensary is just one of four that will be the only ones in LA County selling adult use marijuana come Tuesday, January 2nd because West Hollywood is the only LA County City to approve temporary permits for adult use sell.
Mayor Protem John Duran says, 'I think West Hollywood we tend to be on the cutting edge. Its a little easier for us to maneuver. We're a smaller city."
In November, the WEHO City Council decided that it wanted the will of the people to be realized and ordered TEMPORARY permits to the city's 4 dispensaries so that they could sell to people without a prescription.
Dr. Dina thinks there will be lines Tuesday morning when they open at 6am. Duran doesn't think so, but does expects people to come from surrounding communities…
He says, "I think they will… Beverly Hills has outlawed it. I don't think Santa Monica is going to make it legal so, other neighboring communities people may come here that's okay… we are a small town of 35,000 that swells to 250,000 every weekend."
Meanwhile, Browner hopes all the attention on California the first week of the new year will send a message to the nations capitol. She has a non-profit that raises money to help those imprisoned on marijuana charges.
She tells FOX 11, "I think its not right and I hope that our country will get its game together and really start putting pressure on the Federal Government because we're at the tipping point. I believe we have 27 or 28 states now that are medical. That's more than half of the United States. As soon as more than half has gone "adult use" it's going to make a big push. It s now okay for one person in California to be cultivating cannabis, but in another state its not. It's not American so, we have to change those laws."
In the meantime they are ready for Tuesday morning. And, as she said… she's excited and terrified. Excited, because after all these years "we're finally being accepted to the whole world."
