Wednesday is officially the busiest day of the holiday travel season at LAX

Wednesday is officially the busiest day of the holiday travel season at Los Angeles International airport. At midday the security line extended out the door and across the pedestrian bridge.

"It seems like there's a lot of people and it seems like it is busy," traveler Tracy Mbitha said.

Airport officials estimate 232,000 people to pass through the airport.

Long lines and wait times are worsened because of bad weather across the country.

Gregory Wilson has been trying to get home to Northern California, but he's been stuck in airports for more than 24 hours.

"I'm kind of stranded here at LAX, but hey at least the rent's free," Wilson joked.

Not only are passengers stranded, but their bags are too.

Hundreds of unclaimed bags are sitting at baggage claim because the luggage arrived before passengers.

Claudia Sherman was just reunited with her bag after flying in from Chicago.

"I know next time not to check my hairbrush and my makeup in my bag because that's what resulted in this today," Sherman said.

Airport officials said travel at LAX should slow down New Year's Eve and New Year's day, but it's expected to pick up again as travelers head home from holiday breaks.
