Video shows plane landing on street in Irvine

A small plane with an instructor and a student pilot aboard made an emergency landing on a street in Irvine last week as it was headed toward John Wayne Airport, but no one was injured, authorities said.

Now, a YouTube video uploaded by CalicoStrike, shows the plane just after landing on the street. This video was uploaded 5 days ago and has gone viral with around 500,000 views as of this writing. The video shows the plane zooming down a street past a crowded intersection. The uploader titles the video, "One small airplane landed on Red Hill Avenue, Irvine this evening." In the video, a person in the car says, "Are you kidding me?"

The single-engine Piper Cherokee landed about 6:15 p.m. on Red Hill Avenue near McGaw Avenue and rolled to a stop near MacArthur Boulevard, said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The plane sustained no significant damage and after the crash was being towed to John Wayne Airport, where it was based, according to the Jenny Wedge, spokeswoman for the airport.

Both the flight instructor and student pilot are men, said Wedge said. There was no impact to airport operations, she said.
