The good and not-so-good things people say to L.A. County Sheriff's Deputies

It's 3pm and Deputies Ron Slagle and Jason Zabala notice a car without a license plate. They stop to question the two men inside and notice they've been smoking marijuana.

Inside the car, there's weed… the medical kind, but because one man has a $50,000 bench warrant for not showing up for a court hearing on a theft charge… he's arrested!

The arrest is made by Deputies Ron Slagle and Jason Zabala. Both have been lawmen for 14 to 15 years and, like every one else, are frustrated with what's going on in our country. They're upset about what happened in Dallas and Baton Rouge. Says Zabala, "For me personally it's horrible. I come from a long line of family members who have served on the Sheriffs Department."

The two say that since the ambush murders of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge they've noticed an uptick in people offering up good thoughts. A man passing by shakes Zabala's hand and says "thank you, I appreciate it. No Problem," says Zabala. Says the passerby, "be safe out here today."

But, there have been some who have, in their anger, told them, "we're glad an officer got killed. There are more of you that need to die. It's rare that you hear that, but when you do it's very upsetting."

Captain Kerry Carter is the Commanding officer for the Century Station. He says he's spending more time these days in the Century Station Communications Center trying to keep up with the goings-on of his deputies in the field.

He calls what happened in Dallas ,,, horrible. And, Baton rouge... "unfortunate. It makes it tough for all in law enforcement because we are a big family." He calls this, "a very tough time for law enforcement and across the nation." And, on the streets of LA County. But, the danger is always on the mind of Deputy Ron Slagel. He's always aware, he says, that anything can happen at any time.

"If a bad situation arises you just have to be ready to adapt to it and handle it and adapt to that situation."
