Teen killed by hit-and-run driver while crossing street with boyfriend
SHERMAN OAKS (CNS) - By Christine O'Donnell
A rare Los Angeles rain fell Sunday on a sight that's become too common: A tent covering the body of a woman, killed by a hit-and-run driver.
LAPD Sergeant David Delgado says the 19-year-old was just steps behind her boyfriend when she was struck.
"It appears she just exited a vehicle. Her boyfriend had crossed the street prior to her. She was about halfway across when she was hit," Delgado said.
Neighbors say they heard what they thought was a two-car crash.
"It was a very, very loud boom sound," neighbor Rick Roth said.
Roth says it was around 2:20 a.m. when he and other neighbors ran to the intersection of Moorpark Street and Matilijia Avenue to help, but it was too late.
"We walked around the corner and the boyfriend was kneeling next to the girl," Roth said. "He was pretty much unconsolable most of the time."
Brian, another neighbor, came home an hour after the accident. He says it could have been him just as easy.
"I heard someone screaming and crying and I think that was the boyfriend. I didn't realize i was walking in on a crime scene," Brian said.
The most troubling police thing police say is that the driver knew what he did and still fled the scene.
"The person who ran into her actually stopped and turned around, came back to the scene, took a look at what happened and drove off," Sgt. Delgado said.
Police say the driver was most likely in a maroon sedan that had severe damage to the front end. They're asking anyone who may have seen something to contact LAPD's Valley Divison at (818) 644-8000.
