Suspect wanted in Riverside County animal shelter break-in has been identified

The suspect wanted in a break-in at the Riverside County Animal Shelter has been identified as Jason Johnson.

Authorities believe Johnson, 42, is responsible for cutting the locks on 22 kennels at the shelter in Jurupa Valley Sunday morning. The suspect was allegedly caught on surveillance video.

As of 5pm at the Riverside Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley, there were two dogs found alive, four dead and 7 still missing. It was sometime very early Sunday morning that one or more suspects broke into the shelter, broke 22 locks and let dogs out. It was a chaotic mess.

Shelter spokesman John Welsh says "There were puddles of blood. There looked to be paw prints of blood. There was blood spatter on the wall." Why anyone would do that is not clear. Riverside Sheriffs Department is investigating. The good news is that two dogs were found alive. One is a 4 -year-old white/dark spotted pit bull. She was found Sunday night in a Riverside park. The other is a black Lab-mix found near the shelter.

Though the Sheriff's Department will not confirm they have surveillance video, Welsh says there are surveillance cameras all around the complex. Initial reports were there was someone in dark clothing was scene in the video. But, nothing else is being said, at the moment, about that.

If there are up-sides, Welsh says one is that "only 10 dogs got out the shelter. It could have been a lot worse." But, the vandalism and the break-in has upset workers here. Welsh says, "The employees are upset. They're in the life -saving business. they like to help animals get out of here either by adoptions or back to their rightful owners, so the employees are pretty shocked, pissed off and they'd like to see somebody brought to justice."

Initially, 13 dogs were missing, but a German shepherd was found to have been hit by a car and killed.

A $20,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in connection to the break-in.
