Suspect accused of firing shots at LAPD officers in custody

(FOX 11/CNS) - A man who allegedly fired shots at officers in the South Los Angeles area, prompting police to fire back and shut down a neighborhood for a search, was in custody Friday.

No one was injured in the incident, which began about 7 p.m. Thursday near 49th and San Pedro streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers with the LAPD's Metropolitan Division had been speaking with civilians in the area when the suspect suddenly opened fire at them from in an unprovoked attack, said LAPD Officer Lyle Knight.

Officers returned fire and took cover, LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery told reporters at the scene. One officer's helmet was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by the suspect, but it ricocheted off and the officer was not injured, said LAPD Officer Tony Im.

The man fled the residence with a gun in hand, and police conducted a perimeter search and kept residents from entering or leaving the area. About 12:40 a.m., police announced that the suspect was in custody. His name was not immediately released.
