Southern California braces for extreme heat to continue through the week

Southern California is in the grip of another brutal heat wave, with triple-digit temperatures scorching the region and forecasts showing no immediate relief in sight.

With more extreme heat on the horizon, locals are settling in for a long stretch of summer heat and keeping water close by.

What we know:

Areas across Riverside County, the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities saw temperatures reach triple digits on Sunday.

A heat advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for major portions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Residents are doing whatever it takes to beat the heat.

What they're saying:

At the Mary Alvord Recreation Center in Burbank, families packed the aquatic facility to escape the Valley's intense heat on Sunday.

"I brought my wife and daughter. It's a hot day in the Valley," said one local father.

On Sunday, local families made the most of the main pool to splash around and keep comfortable.

"The plan is to get in the big pool. We wanted to really get in the splash pad, but they're sold out. So that's fine. We're going to get in the water, splash around, have a good time," one parent said.

Despite the high temperatures, some locals are taking the sudden late-season warm-up in stride.

"It's honestly been a pretty cool year up until the last couple of weeks," one family told FOX 11. "It's actually kind of nice to get some summer heat, but I'm sure I'm going to regret saying that next week."

Stay Safe During the Heat Wave

With extreme heat projected to persist throughout the coming week, health officials urge residents to take active precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses:

  • Hydrate consistently: Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Limit outdoor activity: Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Seek shade and AC: If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
