SFPD officer shot, wounded in Taraval District, suspect in custody

A San Francisco police officer has been shot in the city's Taraval District Friday night SFPD confirms.

Police confirmed on social media that an officer was injured in the vicinity of Sloat Boulevard and Everglade Drive. The officer was taken to SF General Hospital. The officer suffered a gunshot wound to the head, but is conscious and breathing and is expected to survive, according to a source.

One suspect was contained and was taken into custody by SWAT after police said they deployed non-lethal flash bangs.

Major police activity was reported at 28th and Vicente near a playground around 9:15 p.m. Police are asking the public to avoid the area or for those already there to shelter-in-place.

Around 8:30 p.m. scanner traffic could be heard as police responded to a possible robbery at a Big 5 Sporting Goods on Sloat Boulevard followed by a chase.

It was also overheard on the scanner that a bag believed to be that of the suspect's was found at Middlefield and Eucalyptus just a few blocks away.

Mayor Ed Lee is said to be on his way to SF General.
