Several injured, including 4 children, in crash on 5 Freeway near Gorman

A collision Wednesday involving at least two vehicles on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway in the Gorman area left two adults and four children critically injured.

The crash was reported about 1:30 p.m. at Smokey Bear Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

All of the patients were critically injured and were being airlifted to hospitals aboard three helicopters, fire officials said.

The southbound side of the freeway was closed to allow the helicopters to land and evacuate the injured, causing a massive traffic backlog.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear. A dark-colored SUV wound up on its side on the right side of the freeway.
