School district to stop naming valedictorians due to 'unhealthy' competition

(FOX News) - A North Carolina school district wants to end the tradition of naming valedictorians and salutatorians.

Wake County school leaders say the titles create a "very unhealthy" competition among students.

"Students were not collaborating with each other the way that we would like them to," Wake County School Board Chairman Tom Benton said. "Their choice of courses was being guided by their GPA and not their future education plans."

A new policy, which was given unanimous initial approval, would mandate a system that recognizes high-achieving students with Latin titles such as magna cum laude and summa cum laude.
