Police: Scooter rider fatally struck by suspected DUI driver in Fairfax

One person is behind bars after a person riding a scooter was fatally struck in the Fairfax neighborhood of Los Angeles late Thursday night, said police. 

The incident occurred on the intersection of Melrose and Martel avenues around 11 p.m. as a vehicle traveling at a high rate speed crashed into another vehicle making a turn. The crash sent the first vehicle careening into the person on the scooter, the Los Angeles Police Department said. 

Officers and witnesses rushed to the scene attempting to save the scooter rider. The victim was rushed to a local hospital with serious head trauma, where they succumbed to his injuries, police said. 

The driver was arrested for DUI charges and may face vehicle manslaughter charges. 

The identities of the victim and the suspect were not immediately released.
